Vaughan Williams: English Folk Song Suite
Columbia Broadcasting Symphony conducted by Howard Barlow
Recorded December 19, 1939, in New York City, on Columbia 78-rpm matrices CO 25602 through 25605. First issued as Columbia Masterworks Set X-159, two ten-inch records (17188-D and 17189-D).
The Suite is in three movements:
1. March: Allegro
2. Intermezzo: Andantino (at 3:11) (Mitch Miller, oboe solo)
3. March: Allegro (at 8:29)
The English Folk Song Suite was written for military band in 1923, and orchestrated by Gordon Jacob in 1924. There were a number of recordings of the band version during the 78-rpm era, but this appears to be the only 78-rpm version of the Jacob orchestration, which has since become more familiar than the original band scoring.
