Van Dorst, Van Dorst & Hooijmajers was formed specifically to play some King Crimson songs at Filmhuis Breda after a screening of the documentary ‘In the Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50’ by Toby Amies.
Red is the only song we played that was originally recorded as a trio (originally by Robert Fripp, John Wetton and Bill Bruford). There’s also a cello on the original recording, which I tried to replicate with a Bass Big Muff Pi (2:51). Out of all the songs in our set, Red was the song that we felt the most confident about.
It’s a relatively straightforward King Crimson track and it’s a blast to perform. The intro and outro may seem daunting at first glance, with the time signatures switching between 5/8, 3/4 and 4/4, but once you get a feel for it, it’s very satisfying to play. The lead guitar part in this section, which I believe is based on an octatonic scale, sounds great and I love the drum fills as well.
