Why did Hitler consider invading neutral Ireland during World War II?
In 1940, Adolf Hitler approved planning for Operation Green.
The idea was tied to a possible German victory over United Kingdom during the Battle of Britain.
Germany feared that Ireland could become a future Allied base for attacks against Europe. Seizing Irish ports would help secure the Atlantic.
But Ireland remained officially neutral and refused to fully join the Allies despite pressure from Britain.
That neutrality reduced Germany’s urgency to invade.
And even if Hitler wanted to attack, Germany lacked the naval strength needed to successfully invade Ireland across the sea.
So Operation Green stayed mostly a plan —
never a real campaign.
