Swiss pianist Edwin Fischer's May 30-31, 1949 recordings of the Schumann Fantasy in C Major Op.17 and Brahms Sonata in F Minor Op.5, transferred from an EMI Références LP by Neal Kurz, who offered it for upload and to whom all thanks. I have done a few adjustments of my own: some of the side-joins of the different 78rpm sides in this transfer left too much space (including a moment silence on one occasion), so I have effected some improved crossfades in the outer movements of the Schumann and in the first movement of the Brahms.
Over the course of two days at EMI's Abbey Road Studio No.3, Fischer recorded these two works on tape for issue on LP but in shorter segments that would also allow for release on 78s.
Although the pianist was in the twilight of his career and not as technically consistent at the time of these recordings, he plays with tremendous depth, nobility, and grandeur in these two traversals. His tone is full-bodied and resonant in both lyrical and dramatic passages, with expansively shaped phrasing, refined dynamic shadings, and beautiful atmospheric pedal effects.
