"Sword of Defence" is a series made by TVB in 1990 and is 20 episodes long. The story takes place during the later stages of Seven Warring States (戰國七雄) period around 300-287 BC. It is loosely based on the events featuring the "The Four Young Lords of the Warring States" (戰國四公子). Although they were not monarchs, the four aristocrats stood out because of their tremendous military power and wealth: Lord Mengchang (d. 279 BCE) of Qi, Lord Pingyuan (d. 251 BCE) of Zhao, Lord Xinling (d. 243 BCE) of Wei and Lord Chunshen (d. 238 BCE) of Chu.

It is a very little known series and I only watched it because of the COVID-19 lock downs and I started to watch old TVB series that I haven't seen before. For the most part it was enjoyable at other times amusing by the poor dialogue and sequence of events. For example, the ending involved the hero carrying the body of his deceased lover into the sunset. It is a sad scene and yet at that moment one of the old wise men remarks "brilliant, the Master of the Ghost Mountain predicted this, brilliant!". I mean that's hardly the time and place for such dialogue, LOL.

The cast was pretty new with David Siu (邵仲衡) playing the lead role of Lord Xinling (信陵君) being supported by Chung-Ning Lee (李中寧) as Lord Pingyuan (平原君) and Yau Kwok Leung (丘國良) as Lord Chunshen (春申君). Joseph Lee (李國麟) who is usually a supporting actor was given a more prominent role as Lord Mengchang (孟尝君). The female cast made this series. Lily Chung (鍾淑慧) was the leading lady whilst Kiki Sheung (商天娥) was also in the cast. It's one of those series that you just watch, laugh, and don't pay much attention to the cringe worthy dialogue, sequencing, and acting from time to time.

I really loved the theme song for the series which I titled "Closer to the Hometown". It's a duet by Patrick Tam and Tong Mei Kwun. So whilst the series is little known, I thought I would translate this song because it is awesome and share it with people. The TVBI release of the series into international markets has alternate lyrics to the theme song. But It uses the same tune and music and is still sung by Patrick Tam and Tong Mei Kwun under the same song title. I could not find this alternate song with the different lyrics though. Anyway enjoy...
