This spiritual awakening marked the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of truth, driven by an intense desire to understand who God is and how human beings are to live in light of God’s revelation. Sproul’s intellectual gifts quickly became evident as he pursued formal theological training, earning his undergraduate degree from Westminster College before studying at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and later at the Free University of Amsterdam. During this time, he was deeply influenced by the Reformed tradition and by mentors such as John Gerstner, whose rigorous approach to theology, logic, and historical Christianity profoundly shaped Sproul’s thinking.

From the beginning of his ministry, Sproul was convinced that ideas matter and that theological ideas matter most. He believed that what people think about God ultimately determines how they think about everything else, including morality, culture, politics, and human identity. One of his most enduring convictions was that the modern church’s greatest problem was not persecution or secularism, but the loss of a true vision of God’s holiness. This theme became the defining center of his teaching and was powerfully expressed in his landmark book, The Holiness of God, first published in 1985. In this work, Sproul argued that God is not merely loving or kind in a sentimental sense, but utterly holy, transcendent, morally perfect, and infinitely majestic. According to Sproul, when the church forgets the holiness of God, worship becomes shallow, sin becomes trivial, grace becomes cheap, and salvation is misunderstood.
