Warning: This barefoot track leads to the edge of a dangerous drop-off. Take care, and keep children back.
Location: AH Reed Memorial Park, access from Whareora Road. Walking via the Alexander Track, boardwalk to the old McKinnon Track - where we barefeet to the Paranui Falls. Then back up the boardwalk to barefeet part of the Elizabeth Track joining to the Hatea River Walkway.
The A H Reed Memorial Park is named after a well known author and publisher A H Reed, who loved walking and recognised that the larger Kauri trees in this forest were important to keep safe, because they are so large (over 500 years old) and so close to the city (10mins drive).
We see the Wai Koromiko Stream which runs through the middle of the park and under the boardwalk running from the Paranui Falls, 23.8m high (previously known as the Pukenui Falls). We also see the Hatea River which joins the Wai Koromiko to flow through Parihaka and onto the Whangarei CBD.
Part of this track is accessible for people in wheelchairs and prams, and includes a fantastic treetop boardwalk 20m into the air, so well worth a visit for beings of all abilities.
