Olympia Coffee House, the iconic 108-year-old eatery in Mumbai’s Colaba, is back in the headlines, this time after Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended its food licence with immediate effect. The action followed an inspection conducted on September 16 after a consumer complaint under the “Safe Food Safe Maharashtra” enforcement drive. According to the FDA, inspectors found several food safety and hygiene violations involving food storage, water quality, pest infestation and staff training. They also reportedly found damaged wooden chopping boards, a lack of protective clothing for food handlers and structural conditions that could create contamination risks around food preparation areas. The development comes shortly after Olympia gained attention for serving chai and bun maska to Hollywood stars Christopher Nolan, Matt Damon and Tom Holland. The restaurant’s long history and popularity among generations of Mumbaikars have made the action particularly notable. FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe announced on September 17 that licences of six other Mumbai food outlets were also suspended: Blink Commerce in Chembur, Vishwas Sweets, A-1 General, Nair Hospital Canteen, Milan Punjab and Sadguru Sweets. The action forms part of a wider compliance campaign ahead of the festive season. Since Mundhe became FDA Commissioner in May 2026, the department has intensified inspections targeting food adulteration and unhygienic practices. Between May 25 and July 31, officials inspected 3,137 establishments and suspended 165 licences over serious violations. Earlier, the licence of Churchgate’s 73-year-old K. Rustom ice cream parlour was also suspended after inspectors reportedly found live rats, flies and expired ingredients. The FDA has stressed that heritage and popularity do not exempt food businesses from meeting public health and safety requirements and hygiene standards.
