This engaging panel discussion took place at the UK National Showcase: Next Generation Professional and Financial Services on Tuesday 11th March 2025, and brought together innovators working on diverse environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges within financial and professional services.
From AI-powered legal tech (Libra) and automated ESG reporting (PortF), to natural catastrophe modelling (HIIT) and a sustainable pensions engine (Cameron). The panellists explored the crucial role of Innovate UK in enabling their projects through funding and fostering collaborations.
A key focus of the discussion was the transformative impact of AI and the challenges of rapid technological advancements and accessing quality data within the sectors. The panellists highlighted the complexities of defining and measuring tangible ESG impact across different sectors, from justice and environmental resilience to financial investments.
Project leaders candidly addressed the challenges of scaling up impactful solutions and navigating the evolving landscape of ESG, including current scepticism and shifting political priorities. They debated the perceived balance between profit and purpose, with a strong sentiment that these are not necessarily mutually exclusive, particularly with changing generational attitudes towards sustainable investment.
The panel considered the future of ESG and the importance of robust regulatory frameworks like the European Union's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), alongside the potential for UK innovation to lead in the global sustainability data tech space. The session provided valuable insights into the opportunities and hurdles in driving meaningful ESG outcomes through technology and collaboration.
