The UN General Assembly has voted to replace the familiar Mercator world map with a projection designed to better represent the actual relative size of continents. The resolution, led by Togo and backed by the African Union, passed with 164 countries voting in favour, one against and six abstaining. The United States was the only country to oppose the move. The new projection makes Africa appear significantly larger, while Europe and North America appear smaller, reigniting debate over how traditional maps shape perceptions of the world.
