The National Arts festival in Grahamstown woke up to some surprising news on Friday. The name Grahamstown is no more and the city of saints have been renamed. It will now be known as Makhanda. The new name was gazetted on Friday 29th June 2018.
Makhanda was a Xhosa warrior and spiritual leader who fought against British colonialisation. He is credited with attempting to unite the Xhosa in their struggle against the British Empire.
