This is the easiest experiment but most intriguing for children. Join our mini scientists as they explore how the pepper races across the surface of the water trying to escape the soap. Subscribe here for more fun videos: / funplaytvkids
You will only need pepper, bowl and detergent for this experiment.
1. Fill the plate, bowl or petri dish with water
2. Sprinkle the pepper evenly on the water. You will need quite a fair bit.
3. Squeeze a small amount of dishwashing liquid to another clean container.
4. Dip a skewer or toothpick or your finger into the dish washing liquid
5. Now poke the skewer/toothpick/finger into the water, right in the center of the dish.
6. Watch as the pepper darted to the sides of the dish.
How does this work?
Pepper is hydrophobic which means that water is not attracted to it. This is the reason why pepper can't dissolve in water. Water on the other hand as high surface tension compared with most other liquids. However dishwashing liquid or detergent on the other hand is able to break down the surface tension of water (that's why they are a good cleaner). As the soap moves into the water and the surface tension changes, the pepper no longer floats on top. As the water molecules still want to keep the surface tension going, so they pull back away from the soap and carry the pepper along with them.
