Help us monitor migratory fish passage! Each spring, thousands of migratory fish return to the Charles River to spawn from the ocean. But many are stopped short due to defunct dams. We need YOU to help us collect data on how many fish use the ladder at Watertown Dam! By counting fish, you will play a critical role in our understanding of how dams affect American Shad, Blueback Herring, Alewives, Rainbow Smelt, White Perch, Striped Bass, and American Eel.
In this 1.5-hour webinar, you will learn everything you need to know about becoming a fish monitor! We'll walk you through why migratory fish are important, the types of species in the Charles River, the challenges they've historically faced due to colonization and development, and a "Fish Monitoring 101" training. Hear from John Sheppard, Research Biologist from the MA Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) on why volunteer fish monitors are so important and how the data you collect will be analyzed.
The 2024 Charles River herring count is happening from April 15 - June 30th. If you haven't already signed up to volunteer, visit our website: https://www.crwa.org/fish-count
Thank you for helping us count these migratory fish!
