Folktales might include creatures with special talents or animals that speak and have other human qualities.
Tololwa Mollel was born in 1952 in Tanzania. He grew up during a time when oral storytelling was still a part of the culture.
Later, Mr. Mollel studied in Canada. He began thinking about the rich experiences his grandfather revealed through storytelling and was inspired to write stories.
Mr. Mollel's The Orphan Boy won the Canadian Governor General's Award in 1990. Since then, he has drawn from his culture's oral tradition in writing many more books.
Today, Mr. Mollel works with schools, libraries, and arts and educational organizations, combining the art of storytelling with theater and musical performances.
