In this unemployment update I want to go over will we need to file a new unemployment claim or reapply with the California EDD once our benefit year is over. Many of us first applied for unemployment benefits in March so our benefit year is almost over. For regular unemployment claims that are on an unemployment extension the benefit year is defined as 12 months after you first opened your claim. It will likely say "on extension" for the end date of our claims. I do think they will make us all reapply or see if we qualify for a whole new unemployment claim because right now all of the unemployment extensions (PEUC, PEUC2/PEUX/Extension Tier 2, FED-ED as well as the entire PUA unemployment program) are funded by the Federal Government. If we qualify for a whole new claim, the State would need to pay those benefits which the Federal Government would prefer. If you don't qualify for a new claim or your weekly benefit amount decreases by more than $25 on your new claim (if you are currently on a PEUC claim, it looks like FED-ED would receive the lower amount on their new claim) then they would keep you on the extensions on the higher weekly benefit amount. You may need to call them at the end of your benefit year (12 months after you opened your first UI claim). This is for regular UI claims only. PUA claims do not need to do this. You might actually be able to certify for benefits after your benefit year ends but this could be one of the things that causes your claim to say pending or not paid once the computer realizes you have gone passed your benefit year. If you are passed your benefit year, you might need to call to see if you qualify for a new claim before the EDD is able to switch your claim to paid.

If you’ve had trouble calling the EDD and can’t get through or have a pending unemployment claim, you California Assemblyman might be able to help fix your claim.
