Welcome to Part 2 of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) three-part Upright Summit, hosted by Vic Armstrong, AFSP’s Vice President for Health Equity and Engagement, and moderated by Dr. Sonya Richardson, Assistant Professor, UNC Chapel Hill.
This summit promotes the launch of The Upright, a collection of AFSP's resources — including research, programs, and policy — that aims to advance health equity in suicide prevention. The Upright promotes resources and programs that acknowledge the critical gaps in access, effectiveness, representation, and cultural relevance in mental health care by gathering direct input from the communities it strives to support.
Panelists (followed by a Q&A):
Dr. Pierluigi Mancini, President and CEO of the Multicultural Development Institute, Inc., on designing mental health services for those with limited English proficiency and deaf/hard-of-hearing populations.
Dr. Dana Prince, Associate Professor of Social Work at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, on the escalating mental health crisis facing LGBTQ+ youth and the innovative programs designed to help them.
Jeff Winton, Founder and Chairman of Rural Minds, on the disparity of mental health services for farmers and the millions of other people living in rural America.
Pre-Recorded remarks:
Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, on the policy recommendations outlined in the report "Ring the Alarm: The Crisis of Black Youth Suicide in America
Program highlight:
Dr. Lena Green, Executive Director of Hope Center Harlem, on leveraging the Black church to provide culturally competent mental health services and reduce stigma in the Black community.
