In economics the focus tends to be on the opportunity cost. That “cost” is what is lost when one choice is made from a variety of alternatives. We can have virtually anything that we want, but we can’t have everything. When a yes is said to one thing, we are saying no to something else.

In this model, it is easy to focus on what is lost. There is an entire world of possibilities out there (which is a blessing!), but we won’t experience 99.9% of them. Thinking in terms of cost is a glass half empty approach to life. Or, in this case, a glass 99.9% empty.

I would like to coin a new phrase: opportunity profit. That is the precious 0.1% that we say “YES!” to. That is the bird that we have in the hand, and it is a priceless gift.

In this age, where we are bombarded with stimulus, ideas, directions, and opportunities, it is hard to keep focused on the 0.1%

If we try to say yes to everything, we end up failing at everything, and end up with nothing. Not even 0.1%.

Learning to really say yes to something means saying no to everything else - and being 100% OK with it.

It is important to understand that when saying no, we are giving ourselves the opportunity to flesh out that 0.1% into something that we can relish and truly appreciate. It won’t be watered down by trying too many things.

On my most recent backpacking trip, I had to say no to most of the things I had planned. Instead, I enjoyed documenting what I was left with, and it was an incredible experience.

In the most obvious way, it was the opposite of my video “Essentialism.” In my new video I take down my tent instead of putting it up.

But sometimes, getting the most basic human need, shelter, is both simple and profoundly difficult. In this case, I just wanted to go home.
