Flight testing new aircraft is risky. I believe that those involved in flight test need to share the lessons they learned to keep others from making the same mistakes, to spread information on test techniques and show ways to promote safety.
There does not seem to be much publicly available information on flight testing that is useful and easy to understand. Aircraft homebuilders are mostly on their own and are becoming test pilots without much training. I want to use what will hopefully become a series of flight test videos to share some of the lessons learned in the form of examples.
I have tested several completely new aircraft, but more often I test modifications on existing airplanes. In this first video I am explaining the preparation that precedes a test flight. I am using a modification to my airplane to show how I go about testing a change to the elevator trim system.
