STORYLINE :
Thousands of protesters waving banners and chanting slogans marched through the Indian capital demonstrating against the visit by US President George W. Bush and closer ties between the world's two largest democracies.
In New Delhi some 10,000 people chanting anti-Bush slogans marched two kilometres (1.2 miles) through the New Delhi streets.
The protests were dominated by the red banners of the communists and the green flags of Muslim groups upset with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But the protest also drew a a hodgepodge of interest groups - from gay-rights activists to obscure political parties.
Bush's three-day visit is focused on strengthening the emerging strategic partnership between India and the United States.
On Thursday the two countries agreed to a landmark deal in which the United States would share American nuclear know-how and fuel with India to help power its fast-growing economy.
While Indians generally have a positive view of the United States, the visit is bitterly opposed by many Muslim groups and leftist politicians.
One protester said, "He (US President George W. Bush) is a war criminal. Actually, there should be a trial of this butcher of humanity. He is acting against humanity."
India is an overwhelmingly Hindu country, but still has a large Muslim minority among its more than one billion people.
Muslim groups also have called for a daylong strike to protest Bush's visit Friday to Hyderabad, a centre of India's booming information technology industry. Muslims account for nearly 40 percent of the city's 7 million people.
