On February 26-27, 1945, during the brutal Battle of Iwo Jima, Private Wilson D. Watson single-handedly broke through Japanese defenses when his unit's advance had stalled against fierce resistance. Armed with his Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), Watson charged enemy positions, knocked out a pillbox with grenades, then stormed up a rocky hill where he fired from the hip to suppress Japanese forces on the reverse slope. For 15 terrifying minutes, Watson held an exposed position on the crest under heavy mortar and machine-gun fire, officially credited with killing 60 enemy soldiers and enabling his platoon to capture their objective—an act of extraordinary courage that earned him the Medal of Honor.
