Ah the legendary Roland Jupiter 8. I had one for many, many years and made many records with it (INHALT song Programming and Them Are Us Too "No One" come to mind) and I have to say, of all the vintage polysynths I've had, this one was the most boring. For the time (1983) it was stellar: rock solid tuning, almost 100 percent continuity voice to voice, very linear sound and smooth top to bottom with a nice bump on the low end. You could gig it, it would save patches and many of them and you could also split the keyboard for two discrete sounds. Beyond that, there's not much to rave about. A perfectly serviceable, reliable and consistent polyphonic analog synth. It's not fat nor particularly warm like Oberheims and Sequential synths are. It's just nice and reliable. End of story.
And so in terms of digital modeling, if there was any synth that I felt like could be almost perfectly done in digital, it's most definitely the Jupiter 8. And that's pretty much exactly what Roland have done successfully with the ACB version of the Jupiter 8 inside the Fantom EX. It sounds nearly identical on most of the sounds you would do on the Jupiter 8 and I think the only time I can feel a bit of that digital vibe is in unison mode. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination and I feel like for most sounds, this is the first time I have no complaints with the digital counterpart.
I think the Fantom EX is probably my favorite synth Roland has made. It's a sort of best of Roland in terms of sound and from a functionality standpoint, it's absolutely astounding. I played the INHALT 15 year anniversary show and Terminus festival with the Fantom EX as the main live synth. It not only ran backing track playback perfectly, but the amount of programability and interfacing possible (including hooking up additional controllers and having multiple people play several parts all off the single Fantom EX) and the sheer sound of it ripped up the sound system and made our traveling far easier than ever before. I used the ACB Jupiter 8 for most of the parts I needed to play and it totally delivered that unmistakable dialed in classic Roland sound. Kudos Roland, the Fantom EX and the ACB tech in it rips!
