This is not a sponsored video! We paid for this Suspension and these are our own views. Handy links below to all things mentioned.
We have upgraded our his-n-her's Honda MSX-125 / Groms with Öhlins suspension components.
The forks have been upgraded with the Öhlins kit FDK111 which consists of cartridges and two sets of springs, of which we fitted the stiffer 6.0 springs. We used the recommended Öhlins oil for the forks - this oil is not included in the fork kit.
The rear shock has been replaced with the Öhlins HO 424 shock absorber. Our bikes are the first generation (OG) Groms, 2013 and 2014 year models.
The forks.
There are many videos on YouTube on how to install the fork kit, we recommend you watch several of those videos, one of the best is the one by Partzilla: • Honda Grom Suspension Upgrade | Ohlins Sho...
We found that the hardest part was figuring out which parts of the Honda manual applied and where the Öhlins instructions applied. A bit of head scratching was all it took. The rest of the process is mainly just fiddly and has many steps. We could not have done the forks without the Tyga "Front Fork Overhaul Kit" - we highly recommend you get some sort of clamps and the allen key. Heat the fork bottoms up a bit more than you think to break the thread-locker. To get the caps off we used a Knipex Pliers Wrench holding the dampening rod and then used a battery powered impact hammer to spin the allen key. This worked quite well, but it took a few tries before we figured it out.
Be meticulous and have loads of paper towels handy as no matter how careful you are, the oil will spill. Take your time and you can easily do it with some basic tools.
The rear shock
This was very easy. It took longer to put the bikes up on the Abba Superbike stand and take the panels off than it took to remove the top and bottom bolt and install the shock. Once the shock was installed we had to remove the (high) exhaust silencer to gain access to the spring preload adjusters using the Öhlins provided C-spanners. It took quite a while for our larger-than-life bodies to reach the sag specified by the manual. This is a step that's quite often overlooked and we strongly recommend you set the sag of the rear suspension before doing anything else.
The rest is setting up the compression and rebound damping. See the video for a bit more about that.
