New EV Fire Research Guides Firefighter Size-Up Decisions

Описание: Size-up is the first decision point at any fire scene, and electric vehicle fires add a layer of uncertainty that traditional size-up procedures do not address. This video previews new full-scale experiments from UL Research Institutes' Fire Safety Research Institute designed to help firefighters identify battery pack involvement early and make faster, evidence-based tactical decisions.

Working with fire service leaders and EV industry experts, ULRI principal research engineer Adam Barowy led experiments designed to answer a core operational question: what does a firefighter need to consider during size-up to guide tactical decision-making on an EV fire? The findings identify the key indicators that point to battery pack involvement and the factors that should shape a department's initial response.

Those findings supported development of the EV Fire Tactical Decision Aid, a tool built to give firefighters clear guidance on what to look for during vehicle size-up, so decisions at the scene are grounded in tested evidence rather than assumption. Paired with the full tactical considerations report, the Decision Aid supports safer, more confident decision-making from the moment crews arrive on scene.
