The four longest floating bridges in the world are located in Western Washington, Their design and creation was necessitated by the depth of the waters they cross. Floating bridges are an engineering marvel, but vulnerable to sinkage under extraordinary conditions. On November 25, 1990, the Lacy Murrow Bridge crossing Lake Washington experienced a tremendous windstorm that filled a single floating pontoon with water. Like a chain, the rest followed into the depths.
The Hood Canal Bridge is the longest floating saltwater span. On February 13, 1979 severe winds broke loose the western drawspan and pontoons on the western half. The wind blew open the hatches allowing flooding of the pontoons and their eventual sinking. In both instances, there were no fatalities. Replacement efforts required a few years and enormous inconvenience to motorists and nearby residents.
