The Tillamook State Forest is a large public forest in Northwest Oregon. It is owned by the State of Oregon and managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry. This area is part of the Tillamook Burn, a series of catastrophic fires that burned every six years from 1933 to 1951.
The six-year jinx was broken by a massive effort that involved building firebreaks and removing the flammable old snags. Logging railroad grades crossed large areas. With the switch to trucks, more logging roads were created plus the railroad grade mainlines were repurposed into roads. Large firebreaks were created allowing the last fire, in 1951 in Cruiser Creek, to be stopped. The Cruiser Creek fire was just over the ridge to the east of our hike.
This hike involved a loop, hiking from the junction of Bark Shanty Road and Township Road. We followed Bark Shanty out to Telephone Shack road, where we climbed up to Muphhy's Grade, an old railroad grade. Murphy's Grade took us back to Township and then down to the truck.
While it did rain at times, it was mostly drizzle and we were prepared for it.
