BOEING 787: Five Defects, One Deadly Pattern?

Описание: Five major defects in ten years. Four have been resolved. One is still under investigation because 261 people are dead and we don't know if it was the pilots or the plane.

*1. BATTERY FIRES (2013) — RESOLVED*
January 7, 2013: JAL Flight 7 battery fire at Boston Logan. January 16, 2013: ANA Flight 692 mid-flight battery smoke, emergency landing. The FAA grounded the entire 787 fleet worldwide — first complete fleet grounding since the DC-10 in 1979. Issue: Lithium-ion batteries entering thermal runaway causing fires. Resolution: Redesigned battery system with steel containment and venting. Returned to service April 2013 after 3-month grounding.

*2. ENGINE ICING (2015-2016) — RESOLVED*
Multiple 787s experienced sudden engine power loss at cruising altitude. Cause: Ice crystals at high altitude accumulating in Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, causing thrust rollback. No weather radar warning. FAA issued emergency airworthiness directive in 2017. Resolution: Engine software updates, operational procedures, design modifications.

*3. FUEL CONTROL SWITCHES (2018-2026) — ACTIVE INVESTIGATION*

*2018 FAA Warning:*
FAA issued safety bulletin about 787 fuel control switch malfunctions. Advisory only, not mandatory. Boeing treated as low priority.

*Air India 171 (June 12, 2025):*
Flight from Ahmedabad to Dubai crashed 32 seconds after takeoff. Both engine fuel control switches moved to CUTOFF position. 242 on board + 19 on ground = 261 killed. CVR captured: "Why did you do that?" / "I did not do that." Investigation focused on pilots — switches have mechanical locks requiring physical lifting to move. Both switches moving simultaneously seemed impossible without deliberate action. Pilots blamed for 7 months, suspected suicide/murder.

*Air India 132 (February 2, 2026):*
London Heathrow pre-flight checks. Left fuel control switch moved toward CUTOFF without lock being lifted. Captain reported switch would not stay in RUN position, moved on its own. Aircraft grounded. This proved mechanical lock CAN fail. AI 171 investigation REOPENED. Mechanical failure now primary line of inquiry. Pilots who were blamed for 7 months now have evidence supporting their final words.

*Current Status:* Investigation active. Unknown if AI 171 was pilot action or mechanical defect. 2018 FAA warning Boeing treated as low priority may have allowed defect to remain in service that killed 261 people.

*4. MANUFACTURING QUALITY FAILURES (2023-2024) — ONGOING OVERSIGHT*
FAA surprise inspections found widespread quality control failures: improper fastener installation, incomplete inspections, fuselage panel defects, Spirit AeroSystems supplier problems. Boeing admitted lapses. FAA imposed production rate limits, some deliveries halted for reinspection. Systemic manufacturing process failures, not isolated incidents. Enhanced inspections remain in place.

*5. STRUCTURAL ISSUES (2020-2023) — ADDRESSED (MONITORED)*
Fuselage skin delamination (composite material layers separating), production flaws in composite panel joins. FAA ordered multiple production slowdowns, deliveries halted while Boeing addressed structural concerns. Some delivered aircraft required inspections and repairs. Structural integrity concerns on long-haul over-ocean aircraft. Additional quality checks implemented, composite construction remains under scrutiny.

*IS THE 787 SAFE?*

Resolved: Battery fires, engine icing
Addressed/Monitored: Structural issues
Ongoing: Manufacturing quality (enhanced FAA oversight)
Unresolved: Fuel switches (AI 171 investigation active)

The honest answer: Most defects have been fixed. Manufacturing quality has enhanced oversight. But the fuel control switch defect that killed 261 people remains under investigation. Until the Air India 171 final report is released, the question of whether the Dreamliner is safe remains complicated.
