Another highly insightful session with Derek Nicholas from Rareform Studios in Munich. This session focused on how to create a larger arm radius in the golf swing by allowing the arms to move in a wide arc around the spine.
A key takeaway: this is not just a technical golf issue. True swing length and speed depend heavily on physical capacity—mobility, strength, and the ability to release muscular restrictions. One of the most important components is proper scapular movement. The coordinated protraction and retraction of the shoulder blades dramatically increases swing radius and overall swing length. Holding the shoulder blades in a fixed, forward position immediately limits motion, efficiency, and speed.
When the shoulder blades are allowed to move freely, the hands and arms can travel farther around the body, resulting in a larger radius and more clubhead speed—without excessive strength training or major technical changes. More speed through better movement quality.
We also discussed isometric training, one of many tools Derek uses to unlock mobility. By addressing the relationship between agonist and antagonist muscles, isometric work helps remove protective muscular restrictions that limit movement. Increasing muscle activation and blood flow—similar to how football players warm up before a match—can instantly create more freedom, a wider swing arc, and a more effortless, powerful strike.
