Touchscreen on the Last Nazareno coverage of CNN Philippines | News Night - Pia Hontiveros (01/9/24)

January 9, 2024 marked CNN Philippines’ final coverage of the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene especially the Traslacion, the grand procession of the image of Jesus Nazareno.

That day, I served as the senior news producer of the 12:00 noon newscast "Balitaan" anchored by Ms. Pinky Webb. I also executive produced the 3:00 PM newscast "Newsroom Ngayon," anchored by Ms. Ruth Anna Cabal. Right after that, I had to supervise the airing of the 5:45 PM program "Traffic Center."

Another major challenge—on top of handling multiple shows—was being tasked to mount the touchscreen segment for CNN Philippines’ flagship newscast, "News Night," anchored by the one and only Ms. Pia Hontiveros, the network’s top anchor and chief correspondent.

I wasn’t part of the regular "News Night" team but I was occasionally tapped to help on special coverage days. Earlier that day, I joined their Zoom meeting to check the lineup. Our AVP for News Production and Content, Kali Quiñones and News Director Arni Resontoc noticed me online (shocks! haha 🤣). They asked me to produce the touchscreen segment with "Traffic Center" anchor Sam Sadhwani as the TruTouch presenter. "News Night" Senior Executive Producer Kai Factor concurred lol. Ms. Pia Hontiveros had already shared her notes and an outline for the Traslacion walkthrough, which would be presented with strong production value using the touchscreen.

Despite the limited time and while handling multiple programs, by the grace of Hesus Poong Nazareno, I managed to write the script and coordinate the TruTouch graphics, beautifully executed by our graphics artist, Kuya Odin Ayo.

January 9 on Channel 9. This remains one of the most memorable special coverages I have handled. Little did we know then that this would be our final one—just a few days later, CNN Philippines signed off for good.
