Demeara Distillers Limited (DDL) in Guyana have released a NEW version of their El Droado 15 year old rum. Released in 2020 with very subtle visible changes, this new El Dorado has a significant change whereby there is little to NO SUGAR/SWEETNERS compared to the old EL Dorado 15 which had a suggested 31g (this is on the high side). Hydrometer suggests 5-8g per litre but this cannot be confirmed so you'll just have to try it for yourself to judge.

*UPDATE NOTES: Hydrometer only measures the density of the rum which sugar changes. It's not known what other sweetners do so the suggestion is sugar is reduced, but can't confirm that it's free frm sweetening or other ingredients. Thanks Rumtastic Rum for the info (FB - The UK Rum Club)
To get a more accurate hydrometer reading a digital hydrometer would be better suited as it is calibrated to work at 20 degrees via a compensation calc. Thanks Steve James (FB - The UK Rum Club)

In this review we look at WHY the new El Dorado 15 yo bottle is important, the new Demerara GI (Geographical Indication), testing the sugar levels with a cheap hydrometer test & reviewing the rum itself. WHAT I like about the rum, how to tell the old from the new and would I recommend the El Dorado 15 yo for drinking, collectiong and / or investing.

DRINK: YES - suggested as a sipper but would be great in cocktails. Clearly a Demerara rum which still holds some sweetness but has significantly more character and flavour than it's predecessor (the OLD El Dorado 15 yo).

COLLECT: NO - Unless you're a die hard Dereara rum fan, this will be on the shelves for the forseeable

INVEST: NO - You may want to pick up an OLD El Dorado 15 yo as this is now discontinued but want realise a good return for many years.
