Located within attainable driving distance northeast from Phoenix, the McDowell Mountains are an easy escape for city-dwelling rock climbers. Multiple entries mean rapid approaches to climbing routes—in which there are over a hundred rated easy- to mid-fifth class. The rock is bomber granite. And, being a desert, it barely ever rains.
Less than a 0.5-mile walk from Tom's Thumb Trailhead, climbers will eventually leave the trails/hikers behind and follow clearly posted directions to the Girlie Man area. There, they find a large, right-facing dihedral named 'Sassy.' Rated 5.2, about 110 feet in all, and mostly low-angled, it is both the longest and easiest line on offer.
Done through two pitches, the first takes up more than half of the length, to reach a tree and comfortable but small ledge. Next, second pitch initiates with less than ten feet of somewhat featureless face climbing that may be frightening, but is followed by a return to mild dihedral/crack. Top out, express sassiness, enjoy glamorous panoramas, and scramble down the opposite side to exit.
