What parents often ask me: “My baby’s testicle hasn’t come down. Should I be worried?”
At birth, doctors usually check a baby’s testicles carefully. Sometimes, however, parents later notice that one testis doesn’t seem to be in the scrotum.
Here’s what you need to know:
Testes often move up and down (retractile testes), especially when the child is cold or tense.
The best time to check is when your baby is relaxed, such as during a warm bath.
Most cases are retractile testes, which is normal and doesn’t need surgery.
A truly undescended testis is one that cannot be brought down into the scrotum — this requires surgery, usually around 6 months of age.
If you’re unsure, it’s best to take your child to see a paediatric surgeon for proper assessment.
