A Texas state trooper uncovered a human smuggling operation during a crash investigation at a truck stop in George West, where 25 migrants were found packed into a poorly ventilated box truck behind stacks of mattresses. The discovery came on June 11 during Operation Lone Star, when the trooper, responding to a minor collision, noticed inconsistencies in the driver’s story and requested a search. Hidden in a crawl space and wedged among dozens of mattresses, the group included men, women, and an 11-year-old child from eight countries. The driver, 43-year-old Silvia Patricia Santamaria of Houston, was arrested and faces 25 counts of smuggling of persons.
