Israeli soldiers on the Israeli-Lebanese dug in on Saturday after deadly clashes with hundreds of Palestinian refugees who were staging a protest against recent Israeli actions Israel.

The violence flared up at Yarin Gate, a former crossing on the Israeli-Lebanese border further west from the Chebaa farms region.

It was the worst violence on the border since Israel withdrew its forces from southern Lebanon in May.

When protesters threw stones at soldiers on the Israeli side of the border fence, the soldiers opened fire with live ammunition.

One protester was killed and at least 14 others were injured. Two of the wounded were in serious condition, Lebanese security officials said.

Witnesses said that demonstrators continued to throw stones and shout obscenities, witnesses said.

Later on Saturday Lebanese security officials said three Israeli soldiers were captured, but did not have further details on the attack.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment on the report, but Israel radio reported that an artillery battle ensued, and that parts of the road along the northern border were closed.

It said three Israeli soldiers were injured in the fighting.

Recent clashes and gun battles between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters have killed more than 80 people - almost all Palestinians - and thrown the Mideast peace process into turmoil.
