Join me for a slow walk through Colombo, Sri Lanka’s bustling and surprisingly laid-back capital. Shot entirely on an iPhone in July 2025, this video explores the contrasts and rhythms of a city where colonial history, tropical greenery, modern chaos and moments of calm coexist in a way that’s uniquely Colombo.
This isn’t a travel guide — just impressions. Snapshots. Sounds. Light. Places I wandered through, and things I noticed.
📍 Featured Locations:
• Lotus Tower
Rising 350 metres above the city, this giant pink and green spire is Colombo’s most visible landmark — equal parts telecom tower and national statement. I filmed it from the Maradana railway overpass, where the train lines fan out like a spiderweb beneath its shadow.
• National Library
A rare pocket of silence. Surrounded by trees and usually empty, this modest but elegant building reflects Colombo’s quieter side — the part most people overlook.
• Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque)
Tucked in the chaos of Pettah, this red-and-white striped mosque is one of the oldest in the country and a striking example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The streets around it are loud, hectic and alive.
• Independence Square
Built to commemorate Sri Lanka’s independence from British rule in 1948, this open-air memorial hall and surrounding gardens are peaceful, reflective, and often overlooked by tourists.
• The Dutch Hospital
A 17th-century colonial hospital turned trendy courtyard. Now home to cafes and craft shops, it’s a reminder of Colombo’s Dutch past, softened by cinnamon rolls and iced coffee.
• Galle Face Green
Colombo’s front lawn. A place for kite flying, deep-fried snacks, couples on benches and endless sea views. I filmed during the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the breeze picks up.
• Gangaramaya Temple
One of the city’s most eclectic Buddhist temples — a mixture of architectural styles, random statues, ancient relics and neon lights. Somehow, it works.
• Beira Lake & Seema Malaka
The floating temple at Seema Malaka, designed by architect Geoffrey Bawa, sits calmly on the lake, a quiet spot in the heart of the city.
• Viharamahadevi Park
Colombo’s oldest urban park, with tall rain trees, yellow-flowered cassias, joggers, kids on bikes and the occasional elephant-shaped shrub.
• Fort Railway Station
Built in 1917 and still the city’s busiest rail hub, Fort Station is a living museum of clattering trains, paper tickets and people going somewhere.
