Think you know what narcissism really is? Think again. In this eye-opening conversation, I sit down with two leading researchers who've dedicated decades to studying personality disorders and narcissistic abuse. We're dismantling the most dangerous myths that keep people trapped in toxic relationships.
Meet Our Expert Guests:
Dr. Peter Salerno earned his doctorate in psychology and dedicated nearly two decades to running a specialized private psychotherapy practice focused exclusively on personality disorders, abuse, and trauma treatment. As one of the foremost researchers in narcissism studies, Dr. Salerno has conducted groundbreaking research that challenges conventional wisdom about narcissistic behavior. He's the author of "The Nature and Nurture of Narcissism" and "Traumatic Cognitive Dissonance" - comprehensive examinations that reveal what science actually shows about narcissistic development and its impact on victims. His work bridges the gap between clinical research and real-world application for survivors of narcissistic abuse. @DrPeterSalerno
Dr. George Simon is a pioneering figure in character psychology with an unprecedented 48+ years of research into character disturbances and manipulative personalities. Long before "gaslighting" became a household term, Dr. Simon was identifying and describing these covert manipulation tactics in clinical settings. He's the internationally acclaimed author of "In Sheep's Clothing" and "Character Disturbances" - helping millions recognize and understand toxic personalities. Dr. Simon's early research laid the foundation for much of what we now understand about covert narcissism and psychological manipulation. @georgeksimon
We tackle the biggest misconceptions: whether everyone is narcissistic to a degree, if narcissists are really just insecure underneath, the truth about shame-based disorders, whether they're actually "mentally ill," and the shocking reality about childhood trauma and narcissism causation.
This isn't just theory - it's research-backed truth that could change how you understand toxic relationships forever. Below is a list of terms used in the interview that may help.
Ego-syntonic
When someone doesn’t see themselves as the problem. They might admit they cause issues but still think you need to adjust, not them.
Correlation vs. Causation
Just because two things show up together doesn’t mean one caused the other. Example: many narcissists had tough childhoods, but that doesn’t prove childhood trauma caused narcissism.
Iatrogenic Trauma
When the treatment itself makes things worse—like therapy that ends up adding new harm instead of helping.
Primary vs. Secondary Narcissism
Primary: normal kid-level self-centeredness.
Secondary: grown-up level self-absorption that’s stuck and unhealthy.
Reality Testing
Knowing what’s real vs. what’s just in your head. Narcissists usually can tell reality—they just ignore it when it doesn’t suit them.
Behavioral Genetics
The study of how much personality and behavior are shaped by genes.
Polygenic
Means “many genes at play.” No single “narcissism gene.”
Overvalued Ideas
Strong beliefs that are unrealistic but not completely delusional. Someone can still function day-to-day.
Dimensional vs. Categorical Model
Categorical: you either have it or you don’t (like being pregnant).
Dimensional: traits run on a sliding scale—mild, moderate, severe.
Pro-social Values
The stuff that makes relationships and society better: honesty, kindness, empathy, cooperation.
Confirmation Bias
Only looking for evidence that proves what you already believe, while ignoring the rest.
Belief Perseverance Effect
Clinging to a belief even when evidence clearly proves it wrong.
Adaptive Functioning
How well someone handles real life—work, relationships, day-to-day responsibilities. Poor functioning = big struggles.
Covertly Aggressive Personalities
Dr. George Simon’s term for people who seem charming but use it as a cover to manipulate and control.
