Unlike the great majority of sequels (especially those released within a year of the previous game), Monkey Island 2 actually manages to beat out the phenomenal 1990 The Secret of Monkey Island in just about every respect possible.

The graphics are gorgeous scans of hand-painted scenes, the soundtrack is a lot more varied and dynamic, the puzzles are just as logically structured but harder (a good thing!), and the sense of humor is tuned to pitch perfect. There aren't many games in the genre from 1991 (or for many years following) that can compare to this one in aesthetics, personality, or sheer character.
