Donald Trump said this is a "defensive war", but the exact goals of the conflict remain unclear along with how long it could last.
Over the last five days, hundreds of people have been killed with Israel now striking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, Iran retaliating with drone and missile strikes around the Gulf, and the US confirming it sunk an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka.
The global economy is also facing risks as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is now at a standstill.
