We hiked nearly a mile into rugged public ground to chase bucks during black powder season, only to have a heart-pounding close encounter with a black bear on day one and no deer sightings. After scouting and hunting multiple areas with no luck, we made a 45-minute move to Tennessee Valley Authority land during bow season. What happened next was unreal—three does came running past me while being chased by a black bear, and within minutes that same bear closed the distance to less than 30 feet. Using a canoe to access remote spots, this hunt shows the raw, unpredictable reality of Tennessee public land deer hunting. No shots were fired, but the encounters made this one unforgettable hunt.
