In Kikuyu culture, Ngemi after childbirth was a sacred moment of community and continuity. It marked the safe arrival of new life and the collective responsibility to protect, guide, and welcome the child into the lineage. Ngemi was not private — it was communal, affirming that birth was not just a family event, but a people’s moment.
Mùrùgu wa Kìmari, a Kikuyu elder, writer, and historian, is one of the custodians of this knowledge. Through his work, he preserves Agikuyu traditions surrounding birth, naming, and communal care — practices colonial systems worked to suppress by isolating families and disrupting Indigenous life cycles.
📚 Buying and reading his books is an act of preservation.
It keeps birth knowledge, Ngemi, and communal memory alive for future generations.
If you’re interested in purchasing his books, DM me and I’ll connect you — or reach out to him directly to support his work.
