Welcome to Unit 1 (Part 3) of Advanced Structural Design (ASD)! In this lecture, we start one of the most important chapters in Steel Design: Connections. We will look at the traditional Riveted Connections and the modern Bolted Connections.

This video is strictly based on the AKTU B.Tech (Civil Engineering) syllabus for BCE701.

In this detailed lecture, we cover:
🔹 Introduction to Connections: Why joints are the weakest link in a structure and why their design is critical.
🔹 Riveted Connections:
Types of Riveted Joints:
Lap Joint: Single riveted, Double riveted (Chain & Zig-Zag).
Butt Joint: Single cover, Double cover.
Failure of Riveted Joints: Understanding Shear failure of rivets, Bearing failure, and Tearing failure of plates.

🔹 Bolted Connections:
Why bolts are preferred over rivets in modern construction.

Types of Bolts:
Unfinished / Black Bolts: Application and limitations.
HSFG (High Strength Friction Grip) Bolts: How they work using friction rather than shear.
By the end of this video, you will clearly understand the difference between Lap and Butt joints and the basic terminology used in connection design.
