Category 5 Typhoon Ragasa (Nando) Hits the Philippines

Описание: Super Typhoon Ragasa (Philippine name Nando) is about to slam into the islands off northern Luzon in the Philippines with winds of over 250 kilometers per hour, with the Babuyan Islands caught in the line of most direct impacts. Signal 5 warnings are in effect for Babuyan island itself, with severe impacts expected along most of the island groups and the northern tip of Luzon, and wide-ranging storm conditions affecting most of northern and some of central Luzon, along with the southern tip of Taiwan.

The storm is holding steady in intensity, and is clearing out its eye again potentially heralding another intensification phase. Pressure estimates late yesterday were near 900mb, and the storm is likely still just as intense. Ragasa will slowly weaken through the South China Sea, and could affect Hong Kong and Macau with typhoon force winds on Tuesday night and Wednesday, along with the coast of southern China. The storm will weaken much more rapidly as it reaches the Leizhou peninsula and the Gulf of Tonkin, and may dissipate by the time it sinks into the coast of Vietnam later in the week.

Rainfall projections remain high, with over 500mm possible for several areas near the track of the storm. The eastern mountains of Taiwan could receive over 800mm in total as the outer bands hit the elevated terrain, along with 600mm for some of the mountains of Luzon. Enhanced rainfall for the Manila region and more populated areas may also cause flooding issues.
