The Coldrif case refers to a serious public health tragedy in India involving a cough syrup named Coldrif, which was found to be toxic and contaminated.

The case came to light after several children died in Madhya Pradesh (and nearby states) following the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup prescribed for common cold and cough. Medical tests revealed that the syrup contained diethylene glycol (DEG), a poisonous industrial chemical that should never be present in medicines.

Investigations showed that Coldrif was manufactured by a pharmaceutical company based in Tamil Nadu and distributed to other states. Due to poor quality control and violations of drug safety standards, the contaminated syrup entered the market, leading to acute kidney failure and deaths in children.

This case is treated as a drug safety failure and medical negligence issue, not a drug abuse or trafficking case.
