The Sonata No. 1 (1945) was dedicated to the memory of Béla Bartók, and shares many features in common with that composer's piano works. Dense harmonies, propulsive rhythms, and polytonality are pronounced in this piece, and the unmistakable Hungarian dance tune in the finale makes the homage to Bartók explicit.
