Welcome to YouTube channel @unknowncyprus. We are in the most ghostly city in Cyprus – Famagusta. She lives by the memory of her own past, and the wheel of history, like a windmill, with each turn takes us to the heyday of the city.
The years of the Venetians rule also remained in the history of Cyprus because they gave to the world the well-known tragedy of Othello, written by the brilliant William Shakespeare. This tragedy was based on real events that took place on the island.
"Port in Cyprus" - this is how William Shakespeare began his tragedy, which on the one hand confused Cypriots, but on the other, made them very happy. Indeed, in Cyprus at that time there were 19 coastal cities that had good shipping harbors that had ports and this is documented. In this regard, Famagusta was lucky. One of the journalists compared one of the towers of the northern bastion with the residence of the heroes Othello and Desdemona. The name stuck, and was then passed on to the whole castle. Since then, it has been called Othello's castle.
Shakespeare's tragedy, published in 1604, greatly excited the literary world and once again glorified Cyprus.
Today, this citadel is, as it was, a separate part of the fortress, surrounded by a deep moat. At the four corners of this rectangular structure round powerful observation towers rise. A dark, vaulted corridor leads to the open courtyard of the castle, where a large stone building is located. Its arched portals lead to the ceremonial hall which receives natural light through high lancet windows.
Once upon a time, ceremonial receptions were held in a hall richly decorated with precious weapons, tapestries and armor. Great nobles and beautiful ladies used to came here. Cypriot wine flowed like a river here. And when the heat subsided, the guests went out into the yard.
Quiet music played here, a melodious voice sang and the guests enjoyed the evening sea breeze. And it was very difficult to identify the insidious Yiago among these guests, who was already hatching a sinister crime and sinister betrayal.
Shakespearean scholars studied the prototypes of the Othello tragedy and opted for Christopher Moreau, who served in the castle from 1504 to 1505.
It was the Venetian governor-general. His skin was dark. The surname was Moro, which means black, and 3 black mulberries were on his coat of arms. He came to Cyprus with his Italian wife, who soon died under mysterious circumstances.
Today, an image of a winged lion, the official symbol of the Republic of Venice, has been preserved above the entrance to the castle. There is the date - 1492 and the inscription of Nicolo Foscarini. It was under him that the fortress walls of Famagusta were completely reconstructed; the castle acquired the features of the architectural style of the Renaissance and has survived in that form to this day.
