About the Music

Paul Jeanjean (1874–1929) was one of the finest French clarinetists of his generation, serving as principal clarinet with the prestigious Garde Républicaine Band and the Monte Carlo Opera. Composed around 1900, his Brillantes variations sur 'Le carnaval de Venise' takes the beloved Italian folk melody—immortalised by Paganini and countless other virtuosi—and crafts it into a glittering showcase for the clarinet.

This new arrangement for clarinet and string orchestra adds symphonic depth and colour to Jeanjean's brilliant writing, transforming what was originally a salon piece into a full concert work. The string orchestra provides rich harmonic support whilst the solo clarinet dances, sings, and soars through increasingly demanding variations.
