What did the ancient Greeks think of the Mycenaeans? The ruins of the Bronze Age civilizations were everywhere in the Greek landscape. Homer's poems were about the "people long ago" who fought at Troy and it was the Iliad's "Mycenae, rich in gold" that Schliemann searched for and excavated. But there are not actually that many tombs assigned to Homeric figures. The monuments were important, but it is difficult to assign exact meanings to their significance because of the role of orality in Ancient Greek historical traditions. Examples like the Mycenaean Acropolis niche and the Menelaion at Sparta show the importance of ancient history to the Greeks but also its limits.
