Appointment signals comprehensive reform of armed forces culture and systems

Описание: The appointment of General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman as the 24th armed forces chief comes at a critical juncture, as the institution is required not only to demonstrate operational authority but also to serve as a driver of military professionalism, values and principles.

The armed forces said the role has become more significant as it is currently undergoing a phase of institutional review and reform, particularly in strengthening governance, accountability and leadership integrity.

Malek's appointment was also witnessed by the armed forces' service chiefs, namely, Royal Malaysian Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain, Royal Malaysian Air Force chief General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris, and Army chief General Datuk Azhan Md Othman.

The armed forces added that the appointment presents a strategic opportunity to undertake a comprehensive institutional reset encompassing work culture, management systems and leadership practices, with a focus on rebuilding both internal and external trust to strengthen readiness as a professional and respected defence force.

Malek, who was the Army's Western Field Commander, was promoted to the top post following the recommendation of the 633rd (Special) Armed Forces Council meeting held on Jan 29 and subsequently received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on Jan 30.
