Join me on an overnight camping adventure through a breath-taking winter wonderland in Finland. As early spring begins to quietly take hold, I head deep into the forests of Nuuksio National Park with my friend Ossi Saarinen, carrying our cameras, winter camping gear, and a lot of patience.
Our goal is to photograph one of Finland’s most iconic and unpredictable forest birds, the Western capercaillie. Known for its size, power, and wild behaviour, this bird is a true symbol of the northern forests. Finding it means moving silently through snow-covered woods, reading tracks, listening to the forest, and embracing the long, cold hours that wildlife photography often demands. We spend the night camping in freezing temperatures, surrounded by towering pines and complete silence, experiencing the fragile transition between winter and spring.
