Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah speaks to media at Korangi Causeway inauguration

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, while speaking to the media at the inauguration of the Korangi Causeway bridge, expressed condolences over the Gul Plaza tragedy and said that for those who lost their lives, everyone should recite Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Ikhlas three times.

He said he was present to inaugurate the Korangi Causeway bridge, fulfilling a long-standing promise made to the people of Korangi Industrial Area and nearby localities. During rains, this area and the city often get divided into two parts, causing severe difficulties, which is why the decision to build the bridge was made around three years ago.

The construction of the bridge began about one and a half years ago and faced delays due to design issues. The bridge is approximately 1.4 kilometers long, consists of six lanes (three on each side), and has been built at a cost of over Rs 6 billion.

The project will benefit Korangi and Landhi Industrial Areas, daily commuters in large numbers, as well as patients of nearby hospitals including Indus Hospital and SIUT, along with educational institutions. Around five million people are expected to use the bridge daily.

He said this project is part of broader efforts to improve Karachi’s deteriorating infrastructure. Some construction work is still ongoing, including linking Shaheed Bhutto Road with Korangi Road. He announced that Shaheed Bhutto Road would be opened by Eid or shortly after, adding that the project faced a delay of about one and a half to two months. After Eid, Shaheed Bhutto Road will be opened from Korangi Road to the M-9 Motorway.

Speaking about the Gul Plaza incident, the Chief Minister said no compensation can replace human life and that the government shares the grief of the affected families. He reiterated that the Sindh government announced Rs 10 million compensation for each deceased person.

He further stated that shopkeepers affected by the incident will not be left alone. Cabinet approval will soon be granted to provide Rs 500,000 to each shopkeeper to help manage household expenses for about two months. The Sindh government, in collaboration with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce, will compensate shopkeepers for all business losses, including goods inside their shops.

Temporary arrangements are being made, with several buildings offered for relocation, including buildings with capacities of around 500 and 350 shops, as well as government-owned facilities. The approximately 1,300 affected shops will be accommodated within two months so that businesses can resume operations.

He added that through the Sindh Enterprise Development Fund, each shopkeeper will be provided a loan of up to Rs 10 million, with the government acting as guarantor and paying the interest. No additional documentation will be required.

The Chief Minister concluded by stating that Gul Plaza will be reconstructed in consultation with shopkeepers, and no additional shops beyond the original number will be built.
