Shirley Chrisholm, the first Black woman to run for president, campaigns in Florida’s 1972 Democratic primary. She called herself the only “unbought and unbossed” candidate in the race. "Unbought and unbossed" was her motto and title of her autobiography.
In 1968, Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States from a major political party.
She was blocked from participating in televised primary debates. After taking legal action, she was permitted to make one speech. Despite the obstacles, the “Chisholm Trail” developed a following. She entered 12 primaries and garnered 152 of the delegates’ votes – 10% of the total.
